0W-20 engine oil
0W-20 belongs to a newer generation of engines. Downsized petrol units, hybrids and many Japanese and Korean models are built with tight bearing clearances and low tension piston rings precisely so they can run a thin oil, reducing internal friction and measurably lowering both fuel consumption and emissions.
Two things follow. First, 0W-20 flows almost instantly on a cold morning, so the engine reaches full lubrication faster during a northern European winter, which is exactly when most wear happens. Second, it is not a universal upgrade: using 0W-20 in an engine specified for a heavier grade can cause low oil pressure and accelerated wear.
