0W-30 engine oil
0W-30 sits between the ultra low friction 0W-20 grades and the traditional 5W-30, and it is the pragmatic choice for a cold climate. The 0W rating means the oil still flows freely well below freezing, so pressure builds within a second or two of starting, while the 30 grade maintains a normal protective film once the engine is hot.
You will find 0W-30 specified for a wide range of European petrol and diesel cars, usually with strict manufacturer approvals attached. Volkswagen long life schedules, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volvo all set their own requirements, and low ash versions exist for vehicles fitted with a particulate filter.
