5W-30 engine oil
5W-30 is the default engine oil across most of Europe, and for good reason. The 5W half guarantees that it still pumps quickly at low winter temperatures, while the 30 gives a hot viscosity suited to the majority of modern petrol and diesel engines, including turbocharged units running extended service intervals.
The detail that catches people out is that not all 5W-30 oils are interchangeable. Two bottles with identical viscosity can meet completely different specifications, and a car with a diesel particulate filter needs a low ash ACEA C class oil rather than a full ash A or B product.
- Check the ACEA class and API grade printed on the label.
- Match the manufacturer approval listed in your handbook.
- Buy enough for a full change, not only a top up.
