5W-40 engine oil
5W-40 engine oil holds a thicker film at operating temperature than a 30 grade while keeping the same cold start behaviour. That combination makes it a solid choice for higher mileage engines, hard driven turbo diesels, and cars that spend their time towing, sitting in traffic or covering motorway distance in summer heat.
Older engines often benefit from the extra film strength, because clearances have opened up with use and oil consumption tends to fall slightly on the heavier grade. That is not a licence to move up a grade on a modern unit, though: if the manufacturer specifies 5W-30 or 0W-20, the oil pump and the variable valve timing were designed around exactly that.
