10W-40 engine oil
10W-40 is the workhorse grade. Typically a semi synthetic oil, it suits older engine designs, high mileage vehicles and cars built before long life service intervals became standard. Where an engine already burns a little oil, the heavier 40 hot grade often reduces consumption compared with a thinner alternative.
The trade off is cold weather performance. A 10W oil is noticeably thicker at start up than a 5W or 0W, so in very cold regions a lighter winter grade is the safer option wherever the manufacturer permits it. In mild climates and moderate use, 10W-40 offers an excellent balance of protection and price.
